Assessing biomarker syngeneity using branched alkanes with quaternary carbon (BAQCs) and other plastic contaminants

چکیده
Biomarker molecules are valuable for the elucidation of ancient microbial ecosystems and the characterization of petroleum source rocks. For such studies, acquisition of reliable hydrocarbon data and proof of their syngeneity are essential. However, contamination of geological samples with anthropogenic petroleum products during drilling, storage and sampling can be particularly problematic because these hydrocarbons may over-print an original indigenous biomarker profile. To evaluate the extent of contamination of drill core and outcropmaterial, we studied the distribution of hydrocarbons in 26 rocks fromdifferent locations in the world. All rocks had petroleum products on their exterior surfaces. Twenty-two samples also contained surficial hydrocarbons derived from polyethylene plastic, including branched alkanes with quaternary carbon centers (BAQCs) and alkylcyclopentaneswith pronounced even-over-odd carbon number preference.Using three examples from the Paleoproterozoic Tawallah and McArthur Groups in northern Australia, we show how indigenous biomarkers can be recognized by comparing hydrocarbon distributions between exterior rock surfaces and the rock interior, and how infiltration of allochthonous hydrocarbons can be assessed through the spatial distribution of characteristic polyethylene derived hydrocarbons in the rock. The methods outlined in this paper give confidence in the interpretation of biomarkers in particularly sensitive applications such as the first occurrences of certain organisms in the geological record and the provenance of organic matter in meteorites. 2007 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Epicuticular Wax Alkanes of Scutellaria Lateriflora L. Leaves
The dried aerial parts of scutellaria lateriflora L. (family Labiatae), have been used for many years as a domestic remedy for epilepsy, hysteria, and nervous tension states. Although several phytochemical investigations have been made regarding the constituents present in this species (i. e. flavonoids, iridoids), none has been recorded concerning the cuticular wax. Using thin-layer chroma...

Hydrocarbons and glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (GDGTs) were analyzed in Late Pleistocene sediments of Core HLY0503-08JPC collected at the Mendeleev Ridge during the Healy-Oden Trans Arctic Expedition 2005 (HOTRAX’05) to investigate environmental changes in the western Arctic Ocean during the last full glacial cycle, ca. 130 kyr. Variations in long-chain n-alkane and GDGT concentrations ...
متن کاملTracing the inputs and fate of marine and terrigenous organic matter in Arctic Ocean sediments: A multivariate analysis of lipid biomarkers
An understanding of the carbon cycle within arctic sediments requires discrimination between the terrigenous and marine components of organic carbon, insight into the removal mechanisms for labile carbon during burial and appreciation of shelf-to-basin processes. Using a large data set of multiple molecular organic markers (alkanes, alkanols, sterols, saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, dica...

The adsorption and separation of linear C1-nC5 and branched C5 isomers alkanes on single-walled carbon nanotube bundles at 300 K have been studied using configurational-bias Monte Carlo simulation. For pure linear alkanes, the limiting adsorption properties at zero coverage exhibit a linear relation with the alkane carbon number; the long alkane is more adsorbed at low pressures, but the revers...

The cuticular hydrocarbons of diapausing pupae of the tobacco hornworm, Manduca sexta (L.), are composed of two types of hydrocarbons: n-alkanes (3%) and unsaturated hydrocarbons (97%). The integument, fat body, muscle, and hemolymph are composed of three types of hydrocarbons: n-alkanes (9, 6, 9, and 2%, respectively), branched alkanes (75, 85, 80, and 56%, respectively), and unsaturated hydro...
